New Zealand North & South Independent Coach Tour

New Zealand North and South is an independent holiday from Auckland based o­n travel by comfortable modern coaches operating scheduled services. O­n-board commentary is available throughout the tour. Services operate daily for 364 days per year giving flexibility to pre-book additional nights at any of the points o­n the itinerary.

Departing from Auckland the tour heads for Rotorua the world-famous centre of geothermal activity. A full day tour includes many attractions and activities in addition to the geysers, steaming craters and hot mud pools. Rotorua is also a centre of Maori cultural and a traditional Maori Hangi or feast is included. The tour continues to the art deco city of Napier, famous for its Hawkes Bay wines and o­n to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, before crossing Cook Strait to the South Island. Travel from Blenheim in the Marlborough wine region is by Pacific Coastal train to Christchurch before a coach takes over across Canterbury Plains to Mount Cook with its magnificent views of the Southern Alps, and Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure “capital” where the bungee jump was invented. The route back to Christchurch is via Dunedin, known as “Edinburgh of the South”.



Depart London Heathrow o­n a scheduled Air New Zealand flight to Auckland via Los Angeles or Hong Kong.

Day 2 – In flight

Day 3 – Arrive Auckland

On arrival in Auckland you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure in Auckland.

Day 4 – Auckland – Rotorua (234km)

This morning travel south over the Bombay Hills and through the lush Waikato pasturelands to the famous geothermal centre of Rotorua.

Day 5 – Rotorua

A full day touring today including a guided tour through Te Puia Thermal Reserve with its roaring geysers and boiling mud pools; Rainbow Springs to see native New Zealand birds, animal wildlife and crystal clear pools teeming with trout. Your tour continues with a visit to the Agrodome Leisure Park, famous for its entertaining sheep show, a gondola cable car ride to the Skyline Skyrides complex, and the Polynesian Spa, New Zealand’s leading thermal bathing complex. Included tonight is a traditional Maori “Hangi” (feast) and concert. Dinner Included.

Day 6 – Rotorua – Napier (219km)

Continue today to Napier o­n Hawkes Bay. Napier, known as the fruit bowl of New Zealand, is a fascinating city which was devastated by earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in largely Art Deco style.

Day 7 – Napier

A full day at leisure in Napier today. Time to explore its dramatic history, architecture, gardens and coast. With Hawkes Bay famed for its wines you may wish to visit a cellar door or try the local Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot during your afternoon at leisure!

Day 8 – Napier – Wellington (315km)

Continue south today through the beautiful Manawatu Gorge passing wineries, farms and coastal seascapes to Wellington, the seat of New Zealand’s Parliament. If time permits ride the cable car from Lambton Quay for magnificent views over the city and coast. Visit Te Papa, the National Museum or the Parliament Buildings. Wellington is also noted for its theatre, art galleries, restaurants and cultural activities.

Day 9 – Wellington – Picton and Blenheim

Transfer this morning to the Ferry Terminal for the Interislander crossing over Cook Strait. Weather permitting, an undoubted holiday highlight will be your cruise through the beautiful Marlborough Sounds to Picton at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound. o­n arrival at Picton you will be transferred to Blenheim, the centre of the Marlborough wine region, for your overnight stay.

Day 10 – Blenheim – Kaikoura and Christchurch (316km)

join the Pacific Coastal Express at Blenheim for a scenic journey down the Pacific Coast to Christchurch, the ocean o­n your left and the rugged Kaikoura Mountains o­n your right. The little town of Kaikoura is famous as a whale watching centre with Sperm whale’s resident in the area all year and transient Southern Right whales passing in the season. Believe it or not your train will pass an old station in Kaikoura known as the “Whaleway Station”!

Day 11 – Christchurch – Aoraki, Mount Cook (331km/207m)

This morning travel to Aoraki, Mount Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain to explore the village and soak up the view. This afternoon’s tour includes an amazing encounter with Tasman Glacier and its terminal lake. Your guide will take you to the Tasman Valley for a 30-minute alpine walk through the National Park. Board your custom-built MAC Boat and enjoy the ever-changing scenery, viewing the Tasman Glacier ice face from a safe distance and icebergs of all shapes and sizes with the opportunity to touch and taste the 300-500-year-old ice crystals.

Overnight (1): Mount Cook

Day 12 – Mount Cook – Queenstown (262km)

Head south this morning over the Lindis Pass and through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown, New Zealand’s “adventure capital” where the bungy jump was invented. But, magnificently situated o­n the shores of Lake Wakatipu below the Southern Alps, Queenstown is not to be missed if you are o­n the look-out for adventure. Breakfast Included.

Day 13 – Queenstown

A full day at leisure to explore and perhaps try some of the optional excursions available. Try a thrilling jet boat ride or the Dart River Excursion, perhaps a more sedate cruise o­n Lake Wakatipu o­n the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. Take a scenic flight, fixed wing or helicopter, or a gondola ride, the options are as amazing as the scenery in New Zealand’s adventure capital.

Day 14 – Queenstown – Dunedin (285km)

Depart this morning for Dunedin, through the Kewarau Gorge to Cromwell and following the Clutha River down through Alexandra and the rich farmlands of south Otago to your destination. Your afternoon is at leisure in the “Edinburgh of the South”. Perhaps take a wildlife tour o­n the Otago Peninsular – see yellow-eyed penguins, little blue penguins and, perhaps most famous of all in this renowned eco-centre – a colony of huge Royal Albatross with their 3-metre wingspan.

Overnight (1): Dunedin

Day 15 – Dunedin – Christchurch (365km)

This morning head north to Moeraki, a small fishing village famed for its dramatic coastal scenery and the strange spherical boulders up to three metres in diameter scattered o­n the beach. Continue across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch via Oamaru and Timaru.

Overnight (1): Christchurch

Day 16 – Christchurch

A transfer to the airport is included today for your return flight via Auckland to London, or to continue your stay in New Zealand.
